The Chennai-based indie developer has shared a gameplay trailer for its production titled Project Madras Game APK. As the name suggests, it is a small, semi-linear open-world game set in the city of Chennai.
Royston, who is currently working on the game as an artist and developer, shared details about Project Madras Game APK and took us through the gameplay of the ongoing title. Here's what we know.

Project Madras Game APK is fundamentally about storytelling. Inspired by games like GTA, Hitman, and Watchdogs, Royston says Chennai is the protagonist of the game as players can explore different levels and different stories.
However, instead of the Western style of games inspired by Project Madras Game, the developers are going back to the roots of Tamil cinema in all its glory and excess.

In the first part of the gameplay showcase, we see the hero strolling along the beach in the marina. Royston explains that the sun in the image was set to time-lapse mode to capture the variation in light as it transitions from day to night. All objects are modeled using physical simulation and can therefore be interacted with.
Since the game is based on Unreal Engine, all the characters we see in the gameplay are Unreal Engine metahumans. Royston revealed that the game currently has over 300 characters at this stage of development. Additionally, we get to see the hero driving an autorickshaw, which is currently the only drivable vehicle in the game.

Another location presented to us is a semi-urban city plan. We're told there are about 50 to 60 buildings on the map, all created using a procedural approach so they look similar but are different and unique. Additionally, buildings are currently half populated and half accessible, allowing players to walk around and complete activities and objectives there.
We also got to see a short action sequence of a gangster shootout in the city. While Royston admits that the characters look a little stiff in action, he assures us that the animation shown is just a placeholder and that they will use mocap to accurately capture the action later in the development process.
